Beneficial bacteria or flora are other names for good bacteria. They function to boost the good health of both organisms and humans. Examples of good bacteria are probiotics. Probiotics can be taken in the form of drugs or food. Its functions are to boost the immune system, assist in digestion, and also fight harmful bacteria. Bad bacteria are those that cause harm to the body and are also called pathogenic bacteria. These bacteria affect the body's organs or its system leading to illnesses (Howard, 2018). They have a variety of ways in which they get into the body which encompasses the oxygen we inhale, the food we consume, and the water we take. Good bacteria can become harmful bacteria when one is immune compromised and also when the healthy flora gets into wrong places like the urinary tract for the case of E. coli.

Good bacteria are helpful in that they protect us from diseases by competing with the harmful bacteria while bad bacteria cause diseases to humans, animals, and plants. A good bacterium in the gastrointestinal tract assists in boosting the body's metabolism, hormonal levels and gives a good mood while the harmful bacteria have a negative impact on hormonal balance, mood, and metabolism. Harmful oral bacteria lead to teeth decays, a plaque build-up, and other oral diseases but also having few good bacteria is dangerous hence balancing bacteria is crucial. Good bacteria on the skin example S. epidermis protect the skin from outside bacteria. They do this by colonizing the surface, therefore, preventing the bad bacteria from invading the skin or even getting inside the body. Bad bacteria in the stomach are a symptom of food poisoning, but having enough good bacteria helps one recover quickly (Portune et al, 2017). Beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus help convert milk into yogurt and cheese which, when consumed by humans, add probiotics to the body. Antibiotics can be formed by some of the beneficial microorganisms which are then used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. The problem here is that antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria. Hence, the good bacteria will have to be regenerated (Howard, 2018).

Genetically engineered organisms which can be plants, animals, or microorganisms are used to make insulin and other essential compounds that are beneficial to humans.
