Best Places to Visit in Jaisalmer - TOP Attractions of Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is one of the popular tourist destinations of India. It is known for its yellow stone architecture and sand dunes. Jaisalmer is also known as Gateway of Thar Dessert.

"Golden City" Jaisalmer was established by Rawal Jaising in mid of 12th century.  Still most of the people of Jaisalmer lives inside the fort.

01. Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer fort is one of the largest forts of the world. It was built by Rao Jaiswal .Raj Mahal, Laxminath Shrine, Merchant Havelis, Ornate Jain temple and gateways are attraction of Jaisalmer fort. Because of royal yellow sandstone architecture and yellow- brown fortification that turns into honey gold at sunset, gives its name "Sonar Quilla" or "Golden fort".

02. Sam Sand Dunes

30-60meter tall sand dunes are most authentic desert safari. People like jeep and camel safari .It is 45 Km far away from Jaisalmer . The best time to enjoy the safari is 4 pm to 07 pm during sun set or 4 am to 06 am in morning during sun rise. The best times to visit the sand dunes are Oct to Mar.

03. Gadsisar Lake

Man made lake was constructed by Maharaja Maharwal Gadsi Singh in 1400 AD. It was built for rain water harvesting but later it becomes the major water source for city . This lake was named after Maharaja Gadsi Singh.

It is flocked by migratory birds which make this lake an ideal place for birdwatchers.

04. Patwon Ki Haveli

It was built in 19th century .It is combination of five different haveli in one single premise. It has museum having rare artifacts, miniatures, mirror work and collection of paintings.

05. Kuldhara Abandoned Village

It is also known as Ghost Village .It is located 18 km far away from Jaisalmer.

Earlier it was inhabited by the Paliwal Bhrahmins but to some happening, residents of the village evacuated the village within a night. Even there was no clue why and where the villagers left. There is a story about behind it that while leaving the village, villagers put a curse on it according to that if anyone try to live there they have to meet the fearful fate.

06. Bada Bagh

Although Jaisalmer known as desert city but the ruler of the city tried to add some greenery in their town. Bada Bagh is six kilometer far away from Jaisalmer city. Royal tomb is the identity of this garden. An artificial dam was constructed to source the water requirement of the garden.

07. Salim Singh ki Haveli

This haveli was constructed in 18th century. It was the residency of the influential family known as Mehta family. This haveli was built on old structure. It is known for their architecture and the peacock style roof. It is believed that two extra floors was built on this haveli but it was disapproved by them Maharaja and those two floor was eradicated. But you won't find any sign of eradication of floors.

08. Tanot Mata Temple

Tanot Mata believed as incarnation of Goddess Hinglaj Mata . This temple was built in 847 AD. This temple is located near Longewala that used to be a battle field during India Pakistan War.

09. War Museum

It is established in the military campus of Jaisalmer city .Its showcase the sacrifice and bravery of  Indian soldiers during 1965 and 1971 India-Pak war.

This museum has memorials which showcase the movie on the battle of Longewala. It is 10 Km far away from Jaisalmer city.

10. Desert Culture Center and Museum

This center introduces you about the culture and heritage of the city. Museum exhibits the Rajasthani Textiles, Weapons and Utensils. It also has ancient scripture written by Rajasthani poets.

11. Khuri Sand Dunes

Khuri Sand Dunes is one of the popular tourist destination in Jaisalmer. It gives you a chance to feel and live the life of people who are living there.

Khuri Village is located at outskirt of Jaisalmer city. Homes at khuri village have impressive exterior decorations.

12. Desert National Park

This park is known for Great Indian Bustard (Gondawana)-state bird of rajasthan . This park is spread over in area of 1300 sq. kilometers. Nilgai, desert wolves, spotted eagles, chinkara and black buck can be spotted there.

13. Dussehra Chowk

It's a large courtyard enclosed in the Sonar Quila . One can reach the Dussehra chowk by using the Hawa Pol (one of the four gateway of the fort).

There is a marble throne which is considered to be a king seat from where king watch the proceedings.

14. Nathmal ki Haveli

This haveli is  known for its extraordinary exterior. It has two wings which was worked by two brothers Hathi and Lulu . It you watch it  closely then you will observe that two sides are similar but not identical.

15. Khaba Fort

Khaba Fort located in Kuldhara village . You will get the amazing view of the village from this fort. This place is rarely visited by the nearby natives as it is considered to be a cursed one.

16. Tazia Tower

This tower was built by the muslim man for the royal family of the Jaisalmer. It was crafted in the form of Taziai. It is a replica of Mausoleum of various imams.

17. Maharaja Palace

A five storied building in Jaisalmer fort recognized as Maharaja Palace. It showcases the grand lifestyle of the King in the form of his bedroom, exercise room or visitor room. The main hall exhibits the painting of different maharaja in different period.

18.  Wind Park

This is India largest windmill park with the capacity of 1064 MW.
